I hate being tricked or deceived. If your plan is to try and pull the wool over my eyes than I just soon you stay as far away from me as possible.
The problem is we all need these people in our lives…those deceitful people.
This was sparked by a conversation I was having with one of my clients earlier in the week. Now, this particular conversation wasn’t the Earth-shattering part. It was the fact that I have had this same conversation with someone probably every week for the past year now.
It’s about getting a brand new business started. It’s about finally getting the guts to put your neck out there and create something from scratch.
It’s about staking your claim of the online world and beginning your million dollar empire.
There’s only one problem…where do you begin, right?
Well, if conventional wisdom tells us anything, it’s to try and find someone who is successfully doing exactly what we want to do and begin to do what they’re doing. Duh.
But, that’s where the problems really begin for most. They look at these experts as their models but all-the-while they are being deceived.
Not that the expert is trying to deceive them…but it happens all the time…and it’s pervasive.
So, after my client decided he was ready to take his big step and begin online domination he suddenly froze….because of his model…that damn expert. He began to point these five things out to me and by his estimation there was no way to possibly operate on these same levels.
1. “Look how easy he makes that seem? There’s no way I can do that.”
He was referring to a presentation that the expert had on his site…and he was right. It was really good, very clean and definitely had been well thought through. There was no way he could possibly do that.
2. “Wow, there’s a lot of things (tools) on his site. I don’t even know what most of those things are or what they’re for.”
Again, there was no argument from me. How could I? His site was loaded with all kinds of plugins, forms, cool-looking screen shots, photos, videos, testimonials, downloads, blogs…it was impressive to say the least.
3. “And look at his articles and those pictures. He’s friends with all the other big experts in the industry. He’s totally connected!”
Connected indeed. I bet he couldn’t swing a possum by it’s tail without hitting one of his expert-friends squarely in the noggin. Interviews, events, guest blogs, even co-created products. It was clear he was connected with the elite in the industry. Dare I say…gurus. Oh, yes…gurus o’plenty.
4. “If I had some specialized knowledge like he did then I could make money selling it too. I don’t have any genius insights or NASA background.”
Ok, he was dead right about this one and it wasn’t even worth debating. He was no expert in anything that I could tell. He knew a fair amount about several things but he likely wasn’t getting splashed on the cover of some magazine as the “Mr. Know-it-all” of anything.
5. “I went to his event and there were 400 people. Plus, he says he has 10,000’s of people on his list. That makes it easy I’d imagine.”
So, there was all of the evidence laid out before me and it was iron-clad. There was no possible way my client could begin his business and look anything like the expert’s. He wouldn’t be as smooth, his site wouldn’t look as good, he certainly wouldn’t be connected, he was no expert in anything and his audience was right around 10.
My client looked at me for a moment waiting for my response. He thought he had me…dead to rights…he thought he had won.
But, that’s when I decided to tell him the truth. That he had been deceived by the expert. Right or wrong…he was deceived and he bought it hook, line and sinker.
I explained that there was only one thing that truly made the expert any different.
And only one thing. That one thing was time and it cleaned-up a lot of messes before he even knew they existed.
You see, I went on explain that he looked so comfortable and it appeared so easy because he had been doing it for several years now. This wasn’t his first time presenting and you can rest assured that he didn’t look like this 3 years ago. But, one hundred times later you start to look pretty good.
We then looked at his website and marveled over how much stuff was happening. It sure was impressive. However, I explained, if you went back in time just a couple of years or so you would have seen that his site didn’t look anything like this. In fact, most of this had been added in the past 12 months. In the beginning it was little more than a blog with a couple of pictures to the side.
What a difference a year makes, huh?
Further, I explained the reason he is so connected is because after three years of actually doing…not thinking about…but DOING…you begin to make these connections with others that are doing, too. Over time, people begin to notice those that are doing around them. And the magic begins. Once you have several doers that are out there actually making it happen they all begin to realize greater successes. Hence, you now have several experts that are all friends, that help one another out and begin to find ways to combine their strengths to achieve even greater success!
I then went on to talk about what, in my opinion, is perhaps the greatest issue of them all…”the curse of knowledge”. The belief that if we know it everyone else must know it too. The information isn’t that special and it certainly isn’t at an expert status.
Guess what I told him? He had been deceived yet again.
I told him that the expert did not have any specialized information either. In fact, when he began to share his content with others there were almost certainly hundreds if not thousands of other people who could have done the exact same thing.
But, they didn’t.
He took his knowledge and began to share it. Then, over time he began to learn more about his topic. He continued to learn more about his area and even made connections with people who knew more than he did about his topic. Once he decided he wanted to become the expert that’s when things changed. Not the other way around. He wasn’t the expert first and then built his business. He began to build his business based on what he already knew and liked and then decided that over time he was going to become the expert and learn a lot more.
Key distinction. Most miss that one…and that’s a biggie.
Last, as I began to have a smirk on my face, I talked about size. Sure, having your own seminar with 400 people means life is good…and there is no way you’ll ever begin with those numbers.
But, I shared a story to illustrate my point. I had been on a call with Brian Tracy some time back. You know, best selling author of over 50 books and continues to speak to over 250,000 people a year. During the call he mentioned how his first seminar had 7 people attend…and 4 of them he had comped.
Yep, you read that right. The legendary Brian Tracy had 3 paying attendees at his first seminar. Zinger!
Heck, I reminded my client that I had just recently spoken to a room of over 420 people but when I had my first speaking engagement it was in an apartment community’s leasing center.
One person showed-up (brilliant) and I was flanked by a lobby on one side and a racquet ball court on the other…which began getting used about halfway into my presentation. Good times.
He knew by then what was coming…it was time. It was time!
If you decide to actually take action and start your business you will be ahead of 80% of the other people out there. And, if you actually have the gull to stick with it and make it through the early, tough times you’ll be in that 2-3%.
Guess what those 2-3% all have in common?
Time. Sure they overcame their fears of failing and took action. But, more so it was just that they had invested the time to get to where they are today.
So, the next time you are looking at those experts, those gurus, make sure and remember that they may be perfectly good models for your business.
But, they are also deceiving you at the same time. It may look good and easy and big and fancy…but it wasn’t always that way.
They just chose to stick with it and make it work. You see, time really does heal most wounds and it cleans up a lot of messes, too.
So, is now your time? I’d love to hear why it either is or isn’t. And if it isn’t, you better have a pretty darn good excuse…because I have heard hundreds of them.
I would love to hear about a specific time you thought that you could never do what some ‘expert was doing’ but went on to be able to do exactly that or something even better!
